How Cooking Helps Children Learn

Teaching your children how to cook helps them gain other skills that will enable them to have an easier life once they leave home. You can help children learning cooking by providing them learning material and review of best meal kit service etc. Children learn several things from cooking. Below is a list of some of them.

Chemistry

Through activities like baking, they learn simple things such as why cakes rise. How does egg white change from clear, sticky texture to soft white peaks? Baking is practically a science lesson. The best part about it is that it is a practical lesson, so children actually see what is happening.

Math

Volume is made simple during baking. The child is able to understand it using simple instruments like a clear measuring jug or a weighing scale. During baking, children can learn that different substances, even though they look different, have the same weight. They will also learn how amount and size affect weight.

Spelling

Sounding out the words in a recipe or reading them aloud from packets can help them practice their spelling. For example, they will learn how to spell words like flour and how to pronounce some of the spices. Label your jars so that it can encourage them to read. Also, teach them how to pronounce words properly. This way, they will be able to spell out words more easily.

Cultural Studies

Children can learn more about the world during cooking. Choose a dish from a different culture at least once a month and spend time learning about the people of the culture. Find out why they eat what they do. Why they enjoy having many spices or few spices. What are some of their popular dishes? Try foreign dishes every once in a while. Start with friendly options like Mexican and Chinese before progressing to other countries. You will also be learning a little bit more along the way.

Nutrition

It is easy for children to try food when it is something that they helped cook themselves. This includes vegetables. They will also learn what to include to make their foods from healthy home cooking taste better and why they need to include that food for a balanced diet.

Self-Esteem

Cooking is a great way for children to improve their self-esteem. With cooking, the results are instant. They are able to see the product of their work. Using positive feedback, you can help them develop confidence in themselves and their work. When children see the whole family enjoying their foods and they receive constructive feedback, they can learn on which areas to improve.

Responsibility

Children when cooking can get the opportunity to feel grown up. This makes them feel special as they assume they are ‘cooking just like mom and dad’. If you closely supervise the children and engage them in age-appropriate activities in the kitchen, you will be surprised at how responsible they can be.

There are so many things that your child can learn through cooking. Occasionally, step back and allow them to do some of the things by themselves. This is, of course, after showing them the safe way to do the task.
