In the past few year years, there had been a steady rise in the number of cosmetic procedures in the United States. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there had been an increase of about 115% of cosmetic and other related procedures performed inside the country for the past 15 years. As explained by Dr Michael Zacharia doing plastic surgery is already a common thing in the country and is widely accepted by both men and women alike.
This leads us to a very controversial question: should a child undergo plastic surgery? Is it alright for the kids to have a cosmetic procedure? The answer is definitely “No” according to Dr. Ned Snyder of Austin Texas. Though plastic surgery is a broad topic, having the same reasons for doing cosmetic surgery from adults is not advisable when it is done to children.
When Is It Ok to Get Plastic Surgery?
According to Dr. Snyder, as far as he is concerned, a child can only undergo plastic surgery when it is necessary and the child is in need of fixing any congenital abnormality and deformity. Dr. Snyder added that when a surgeon is doing an operation that is not within the norm such as breast augmentation, then his answer is definitely a No. So, when is it ok to get plastic surgery for children? The following are some notable cases:
This has been the most common cosmetic procedure that has been done for children in the last few years. When a child regardless of sex feels uncomfortable with their nose, it often leads them to become traumatized and uncomfortable. This condition can lead them to emotional stress that can affect them psychologically.
Having to undergo a nose job or rhinoplasty will definitely help in fixing the issue and improve the child’s quality of life. This procedure is also the most common reason for a child to undergo plastic surgery. Rhinoplasty can help improve the size, width, and shape of the nose as well as facial harmony, nasal symmetry, and improve breathing.
While breast augmentations and other similar procedures are definitely not advisable for children, breast reduction can be allowed according to Dr. Snyder. Those teenagers with large breast are often being affected by it, causing them to sometimes develop emotional distress.
Unwanted attention and the inability to participate in sports activities can also have a negative impact on girls with this kind of condition. Thus, breast reduction is the best solution for these girls because it will definitely improve their life when it is corrected early.
Body Contouring for Obese Children
Today, there are more and more children who are obese even at an early age. While the parents of these children are looking for solutions, there have been consultations about body contouring as an answer to child obesity. Though it is like an odd or even an extreme solution, it is all about improving the quality and the life of the children that should be the primary priority.
As a general rule, it is still not normal for a child to undergo plastic surgery. It is only proper and advisable when it is within the norm and can help the child improve his life and for the benefits of his future.
