Many shampoo and hair care products are labeled as safe and gentle for our children’s skin. However, most of these products usually contain a reasonable amount of toxins which are considered to be unsafe. We shouldn’t choose the products that could be harmful to our children and of course we only want the best for them.
Most toddlers do not like it when their hair is washed and rinsed. This often leads to a lot of crying, and screaming, and can be agonizing for them. Most of them are just simply scared of the water, or the stinging shampoo that hurts their eyes or mouth. That is why it is important to choose the right shampoo and hair care products for your child that does not contain any harmful ingredients that can irritate them.
The following are some of the tips that will help you choose the right hair and bath products for your child:
Read Before You Buy
Most shampoo and hair care products for children contain chemicals that are harmful to them like dioxane and formaldehyde. These are mostly used in baby bath soaps and shampoos to conserve them. When these are absorbed in the baby’s skin, it can cause an allergic reaction or worse, cancer. Avoid hair care and bath products that have these chemicals.
Be Careful of the “Fragrance” Label
Most bath products have the infamous “fragrance” ingredient, but looks can be deceiving as these fragrance ingredients can hide some nasty chemicals that could possibly be harmful to your child.
Avoid Antibacterial Products
Getting an antibacterial soap or shampoo might be a good idea to use for your baby; however, they contain an antibacterial ingredient which is not usually used for products specifically made for toddlers and babies. In other words, avoid products that contain the antibacterial and antimicrobial label.
The Lesser, the Better
Babies and toddlers’ hair produces a very small amount of oil compared to adults, so there is no need for them to wash their hair every day. In fact, you only need to wash their hair for once or twice a week.
If your baby suffers from eczema or dermatitis, you should avoid using perfume-based products and shampoo including essential oil and plant-based extracts. They can lead to skin irritation, so it is advisable to avoid them completely and instead use an emollient as an alternative.
Use Natural Ingredients
Natural ingredients like essential oil have been in use for medicinal purposes for many years. It is used to cleanse the skin and help calm the body. It can be used to help your baby go to sleep and even relieve colic. However, it is not recommended for babies that are younger than 3 months old. Since there is a wide range of essential oils that can be used today, make sure that you are using authentic, pure, and untainted essential oils. Essential oils that are mixed with other chemicals like alcohol can be irritating to the baby’s skin.
Follow these tips and you’ll surely protect your babies from harmful chemicals. As their skin and hair are still sensitive, it’s best that we give them the proper bathing items to ensure that they’re not only properly clean but totally safe as well.
